USDA Hardiness Zones

John 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.

Hardiness zones give a general rule of thumb as to the hardiness of plants in your neck of the woods.  The USDA Hardiness Zone map only tells the average annual minimum temperature.  Many factors affect the ability of a plant to survive your type of winter. Your own yard may have several micro hardiness zones which would enable a plant classified as zone 6b (0 to -5) survive without a problem in your zone 5a (-15 to -20) area. The idea here is that the air temperature is not the sole factor of a plant's ability to survive a winter.

What can make a different zone in your own yard?

  • Foundation planting close around your house
  • Snow cover
  • Fenced-in/protected areas
  • Dryness/wetness of your soil

If a plant may be ranked in a higher zone than yours (1/2 to 1 full step up) it may still survive if you can found one of those protected areas.  You may also note that the same plant may be ranked at different hardiness zones in reference material.  It is probably one of those plants that if in the right spot can tolerate a colder climate.
