Sit back and relax and enjoy the beautiful foliage of these magnificent plants.  But I am sure, being a gardener, you still want to get in there and get dirty.  Here are some things you can do.

Hostas

  • As flowers emerge and become spent, trim them back to a height just under the leaf mound.  Out of sight, out of mind.  Cutting them back will not harm the plant.  Some folks don't like the hosta flower, and yes, cutting the scape down prior to blooming will also not hurt the plant.
  • If you did not use a slow release fertilizer, you can add the second dose of fertilizer midway through the summer.  Avoid fertilizer after mid August.  Fertilizing late will harm the plant when it goes into dormancy.
  • Cut off leaves that become damaged or sunburned.

Grasses

  • Give them another dose of fertilizer, they are grass and will enjoy the extra food.  If you know how to keep your lawn healthy, then you already know how to keep your ornamental grass healthy.
  • Keep an eye on weeds that may try to make a hide out within your ornamental grass clump.  They may try to hide but their weedy plume will reveal their treachery.
